The main region purely allotted for tobacco production is at Vuelta Abajo. Farmers in this region, located at the western part of the island, grow all types of tobacco leaves mostly for export and local consumption. Tobacco cultivation in the area dates back to the 1830’s and is known the produce the best varities of cigars in Cuba. Semi Vuelta comes in second place after Vuelta Abajo in the quality and volume of tobacco production. The area produces Habano wrapper leaves which are cultivated in an area about only one percent of the total area allotted for tobacco cultivation in Vuelta Abajo. The soil and climate in Vuelta Arriba is ideal for cultivation of Jose L. Piedra leaves. Partido also specializes in growing wrapper leaves.
